A New Home In The Holme Valley
Outlookers began back in 2008 with a group in Huddersfield that at the time was known as Kirklees Visual Impairment Network (KVIN). Little did the founding members know then what potential the group would have over the whole of Kirklees. A National Lottery grant received in late 2017 led to the launch of a Dewsbury group in early 2018, followed by Batley in 2019. Further plans for expansion were being developed when suddenly COVID hit. Face to face groups were put on hold but as an organisation we expanded our online and telephone services to continue a seamless service provision throughout the pandemic.
Move forward to 2022 and all our face-to-face groups have reopened and re-established themselves whilst we still offer a regular online option. But as we are an organisation that is constantly evolving and looking at new ways of reaching communities, we would like to announce another addition to our services.
On Thursday, the 30th of June we launched a new group, this time being held in Holmfirth and taking our service provision for the first time direct into the Holme Valley. Being held at a venue known as “The Tech” which is in central Holmfirth, this monthly group will take place on the last Thursday of the month between 10 am and 1 pm.
Supported by both staff members and volunteers, the first group in June was well attended by five members who all gained valuable peer support and technology related advice in a venue that was more local to them. With yet more people showing an interest in attending future sessions we look forward to this group becoming as successful as the North Kirklees and central Huddersfield options.
Anyone living with a visual impairment and likewise supporting friends or family are welcome to attend. The service is provided free of charge although all donations are welcomed. If you would like more information please contact Sam on 07462 596497 or email Sam.heaton@outlookers.org.uk
