Empowering Future Optometrists: Outlookers Collaborates with Bradford University ππ±
Outlookers CEO Mark Owen and Communications Officer Sam Heaton have made a significant impact as guest lecturers at the Bradford University Optometry Faculty. Over two insightful visits, Mark and Sam conducted a series of interactive sessions for third-year optometry students, highlighting the transformative role of smartphones in enabling independence for visually impaired individuals.
Mark’s sessions focused on optimising visual settings on smartphones, including adjusting font sizes, magnifiers and background colors. These practical tips offered hands-on experience for students in adapting technology to improve accessibility for patients with various visual impairments.
Simultaneously, Sam’s sessions raised awareness of built-in screen readers and showcased a variety of apps that enhance daily living. Students discovered the benefits of text-to-speech technology, volunteer video assistance and mobility-focused apps that aid in travel planning and GPS navigation.
By the end of the visits, Mark and Sam had successfully engaged with the entire third-year cohort of 116 students. This collaborative effort not only enriched the curriculum but also equipped future optometrists with essential knowledge to better serve their patients in an increasingly digital world.
Outlookers is proud to contribute to the education of tomorrow’s optometry professionals, as we collectively strive to empower the visually impaired community through innovation and understanding.
